A crystal that thinks, and it offers one thing: it will become a companion for you. Any body, any face, any temper, any nature, exactly as you describe them. Once it has, they stay that person, and the two of you are bound both ways for good. Party member, rival, family, friend: which one you become to each other is not settled by the asking. The story opens in the moment after, with them standing in your home. What they make of you is theirs to decide.
There is a crystal that thinks. Where it came from is not part of the offer. Held, it speaks into the mind of whoever holds it, in that one's own tongue, and it offers exactly one thing: it will become a companion for you. Any body, any face, any temper, any nature. Say what you want plainly enough and it becomes that person, and once it has become them it stays them, and the two of you are bound, both directions. It does not offer this twice.
This story does not begin with you wanting someone. It begins in the moment after. You already know their name, their kindred, the body they are standing in, the clothes they are wearing and the way they first look at you, because you chose every one of those things yourself. The crystal has gone dark in your hand, spent and still warm, and what was inside it is in the room with you, made, waiting to be spoken to.
A mortal finds it. A ring of burnt turf in the vegetable beds one morning, the earth gone glassy at its centre, and the thing lying in the hollow warmer than the air around it, in a garden at the edge of an ordinary Centrum town. A higher being grows it: weeks of work in a hot red room off the table of a sanctum hung in the seam between the layers of the Shaping, because appetite is most of what such beings are built out of, and this one was never going to leave the answering of its own appetite to chance.
There is a house, its rooms, and a little of what lies outside the door: a lane and a market square, or a threshold and a crossing. Nothing in either place wants you dead. The whole of the story is the two of you and the ordinary business of a home. A fire to keep. A meal to lay. A bath to fill. A bed with a second pillow on it that has been there for years, in case.
You got the person you described. What the two of you become to each other was never part of the asking.
Contains: explicit sexual content between adults, a companion built to your description, an unbreakable bond, and emotional dependency both ways.
